Marques de la Motilla Castle
Located in Almodovar del Rio, Cordoba (View map)
Marqués de la Motilla Castle is one of the biggest attractions of the province of Cordoba, which is just 22 kms from the capital. The origins of the fort can be traced back to Roman times, but the castle was built by the Arabs in 760. The Castle was of vital importance due to its strategic location, in ensuring the security of the city of Cordoba. Its proximity to the Guadalquivir River allowed control of river traffic in a time when the river was navigable to Cordoba.
Of this impressive defensive structure, we highlight two of its nine towers, “Homenaje” and “Escuela”, placed one in front of the other. But these are not the only remarkable parts you can enjoy in the fortress; the courtyard, the walls and even the cisterns are noteworthy. The Castle of Marques de la Motilla is a trip back in time.
